โšก Quick Guide Summary

How to take over every gang territory in GTA San Andreas: starting wars, wave weapons by defense level, defending turf, how many hoods you need, and rewards.

Understanding the Turf War System

The gang territory takeover system defines the combat loop of Grand Theft Auto San Andreas. Fighting for control of Los Santos requires strategic weapon usage, map awareness, and intense wave survival mechanics. Controlling the streets yields massive respect gains and a steady stream of passive income delivered straight to the Johnson House.

When you look at the map, colored blocks represent turf ownership. Green indicates Grove Street Families control, purple belongs to the Ballas, and yellow signifies Los Santos Vagos territory. To paint the map green, you must systematically travel to enemy zones, provoke wars, and survive escalating waves of heavily armed gang members.

When Gang Wars Unlock

Turf wars do not become available immediately. You must progress through the Los Santos storyline until you complete the mission Doberman, given by Sweet. This mission serves as a mandatory tutorial for the territory takeover mechanics.

However, players should avoid grinding 100% territory control during this early phase. Following the climax of the mission The Green Sabre, Carl Johnson is exiled from Los Santos, and you lose all captured territories. The system remains locked for a massive portion of the game. It permanently unlocks much later during the mission Home Coming, followed closely by Beat Down on B Dup. Once you reach this late-game stage, your progress permanently saves.

Initiating a Turf War

Starting a war requires precise conditions. You cannot simply perform a drive-by shooting from a moving vehicle. You must be completely on foot, standing directly inside the colored zone you wish to attack. Once inside, you must locate a group of at least three rival gang members (Ballas or Vagos) and eliminate them quickly.

Successfully killing three rivals triggers a flashing red on-screen warning, and the map sector will begin flashing red. This signifies the war has officially begun. You cannot leave the flashing zone; stepping out of bounds for too long automatically forfeits the war.

Surviving the 3 Escalating Waves

Every war has three waves, and what the enemies carry depends on how strongly the gang holds the area. Check the map first: darker purple or yellow means a heavily defended hood, lighter shading means a weak one.

ModeratePistols, Micro SMGsMicro SMGs, SMGsSMGs, AK-47sIdlewood, Willowfield
HeavyMicro SMGs, SMGsSMGs, AK-47sAll AK-47sEast Los Santos, Jefferson

Start with the lightly defended hoods to build up territory and respect, and leave East Los Santos and Jefferson until you have body armor and an M4. In big, heavily defended hoods a gang car with two members may also patrol and do drive-bys; you don't have to kill it to finish the wave.

Control where enemies spawn. Waves usually spawn out of your field of view. If you point the camera at a wall, groups tend to appear on both sides of you and flank you. Point it down the street you want them to come from instead, and keep your back to cover.

If CJ is wasted during wave 2 or 3, the hood turns grey (disputed) instead of green, and you'll need to fight for it again.

Tactical Pickups and Spawns

Health pickups appear on the streets of the contested zone as soon as the war starts, and body armor pickups appear once you beat the first wave. They disappear 60 seconds after the war ends. In heavily defended hoods, save the armor for wave 3, when the AK-47s arrive.

Starting a gang war also stops your wanted level from rising (on mobile and the Definitive Edition it clears it completely), so police that chase you into the zone can be dealt with without more stars. Recommended Combat Loadout

Entering a territory war with just a pistol guarantees failure. Prepare a heavy loadout at Ammu-Nation before starting your conquest.

  • M4 Assault Rifle: The absolute best weapon for gang wars. High accuracy, massive range, and fast fire rate.
  • Combat Shotgun: Perfect for close-quarters emergencies when enemies breach your cover.
  • Sniper Rifle: Sometimes enemies glitch and spawn on top of inaccessible roofs. Use a sniper to pick them off without abandoning the zone.
  • Rocket Launcher: Highly effective for instantly deleting tightly packed groups of enemies in wave 3.

Conquering Hard-to-Trigger Neighborhoods

Certain territories present a massive logistical challenge. Specific areas like the tiny sliver of Temple, the small block in Jefferson, and parts of East Los Santos barely cover any physical space. Because the zones are so tiny, gang members almost never spawn inside them naturally.

To capture these micro-territories, you must use the kiting method. Stand directly inside the tiny territory. Look across the street into a neighboring large territory where enemies spawn frequently. Shoot an enemy with a sniper rifle to grab their attention, and wait for them to cross the invisible border into your tiny zone before killing them. Alternatively, shoot them while standing in the small zone; the game often counts the kill based on your location rather than the enemy location.

Rewards for 100% Territory Takeover

Owning every hood doesn't count toward the game's 100% completion, but it does three useful things. The Johnson House income grows with your territory, up to its $10,000 daily cap. Rival gangs stop attacking your turf completely once every territory is green. And on versions with achievements and trophies, taking every territory unlocks Ain't Nothing But a G Thing.

How Many Territories Do You Need?

Los Santos has 53 gang territories. You only need Grove Street to hold more than 35% of them (about 19 to 20 hoods) to unlock the final mission, End of the Line. Taking the rest is optional. Four extra Aztecas hoods in El Corona and Little Mexico can be held temporarily between Home Coming and Los Desperados, but they go back to the Aztecas afterwards and don't count toward the 53.

Defending Your Territory From Counter-Attacks

Once you own hoods next to enemy turf, the Ballas and Vagos will try to take them back. A territory under attack flashes red on the map with an icon. Only one hood is attacked at a time, and only hoods that border enemy territory can be attacked.

  • Time limit: you have roughly five minutes to get there. Ignore it and the hood is lost, along with some respect.
  • What to expect: three gang cars and 8 to 12 attackers, including shotguns, which knock CJ down. Health and armor pickups spawn here too.
  • Cancelling an attack: saving the game at a save point, or starting a vehicle job such as Paramedic or Vigilante, cancels the attack. Getting wasted or busted before you arrive also cancels it, as long as the attackers haven't spawned yet.

The attacks stop for good once every territory is under Grove Street control, which is the real reason to finish the map.

Common Gang War Glitches

  • Enemies stuck underwater: wars started along Santa Maria Beach can spawn enemies in the sea, where you can't kill them and the war never ends. Face the camera toward the water when the waves spawn, because enemies don't spawn where you're looking.
  • Can't trigger a war in tiny hoods: the Jefferson Motel area and the street outside the 24/7 in Temple only trigger if you stand in a specific spot. Use the kiting trick above.
  • Not enough gang members around: in weak hoods near Ocean Docks and the Verona Mall, a headshot on a gang member through a car windshield still counts, and usually pulls nearby members out of their cars.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do you start a gang war in GTA San Andreas?

Walk into a colored enemy territory on foot, locate a group of three or more Ballas or Vagos members, and shoot them to initiate the flashing territory alert.

Why did my gang territories disappear?

Gang territories temporarily disappear after the mission The Green Sabre due to storyline events. They return during Home Coming, when CJ goes back to Los Santos.

What weapons are best for gang wars?

The M4 assault rifle and Combat Shotgun are the most effective weapons. Use a sniper rifle for enemies stuck on rooftops and a rocket launcher for large clusters.

What happens when you take over 100% of gang territories?

Once every territory is green, rival gangs stop attacking your hoods, the Johnson House income reaches its $10,000 cap, and the Ainโ€™t Nothing But a G Thing achievement unlocks on versions that have it. It does not count toward 100% completion.

How do you take over small territories with no gang members?

Stand inside the small territory border and shoot enemies in a neighboring larger territory, or kite enemies across the border before killing them to trigger the war.
